Understanding Section 504 at Athenian Schools
What is a 504 Plan?
A 504 Plan is designed to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to education. Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a student may qualify if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning, concentrating, walking, or breathing.
Key Components of a 504 Plan
- A qualifying physical or mental impairment
- The impairment must substantially limit a major life activity
- The student requires accommodations to access learning
- An evaluation is conducted (less formal than a special education classification)
A written plan outlines the student’s specific accommodations
Common 504 Accommodations
- Environment: Preferential seating, quiet testing areas
- Instructional: Extended time, shortened assignments, audiobooks
Support: Behavioral supports, breaks, organizational assistance.
