Understanding Section 504 at Athenian Schools

At Athenian Schools, we are dedicated to ensuring that all students have equal access to educational opportunities. Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a critical part of our commitment, providing protections for students with disabilities. A 504 plan is designed to support students who have a diagnosed mental or physical impairment that affects their ability to learn or participate in school activities.

What is a 504 Plan?

A 504 plan is an individualized plan for students who require accommodations or modifications to succeed in the classroom. It is tailored to meet the specific needs of the student, ensuring they have the necessary support to access the same educational opportunities as their peers. These plans are created for both short-term and long-term assistance, depending on the student’s condition.

Who Qualifies for a 504 Plan?

A 504 plan may be an option for students who:

  1. Have been evaluated for special education under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) but did not qualify for services.

2. Have been diagnosed with a disability and need classroom accommodations to succeed academically.

3. Require a positive behavior plan, medical health care plan, or other school services to support their learning.

4. Previously received special education services but are no longer eligible under IDEA.

How to Get a 504 Plan

At Athenian Schools, we ensure that the process for obtaining a 504 plan is straightforward and supportive. If you believe your child may benefit from a 504 plan, the first step is to contact our 504 Coordinator, Tammie Bankhead, at tammiebankhead@aea.rocks to schedule an appointment.
