Welcome back to our Parent University series—designed to help you feel confident and informed as you guide your child’s learning journey with Athenian Schools.
Today, let’s dive into a topic that often raises questions for parents in blended education programs: education standards. What are they? How do they work? And why should you care?
What Are Education Standards?
In simple terms, education standards are clear expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. They act as guideposts for teachers, schools, and parents to ensure children are building skills step by step.
For example, a standard for 3rd-grade reading might state: “Students will be able to determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details.” This doesn’t tell teachers how to teach—but it sets the goal for what students need to learn.
How Do They Work in Practice?
At Athenian Schools, we align our curriculum with Utah’s state standards while also incorporating flexibility for blended education and homeschooling families. Here’s how it works:
✅ Curriculum Design – Our teaching materials and online modules are created to meet (and often exceed) grade-level standards.
✅ Progress Monitoring – Regular assessments help track how well your child is mastering the standards.
✅ Parent Partnership – We provide parents with resources and clear expectations so you can support learning at home in ways that align with standards.
Think of standards as a roadmap. Teachers choose the route, and parents are copilots, helping your child reach each milestone.
Why Are Education Standards Important?
- Consistency Across Schools
Standards ensure that no matter where a student lives, they are learning the essential skills needed for future success. - Preparation for the Future
Whether students aim for college, a trade, or the workforce, standards help them build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. - Support for Blended Learning Families
When learning happens partly at home, standards give parents a clear picture of what their child should be working toward.
