Hello everyone,
I’m Jared Ferguson, Superintendent of Athenian Schools, and today I’m incredibly excited to share some wonderful news: Moab Charter School has officially joined our Athenian Schools family. This integration marks a significant moment, not only for our schools but also for education across rural Utah. I’d like to take this opportunity to talk openly about why this merger matters, what families can expect, and how we’re committed to enhancing educational opportunities in Moab.
Why This Integration Matters
Moab Charter School has always held a special place in its community. Founded in 2004, it has provided a nurturing, community-focused education to countless families. But as with many rural charter schools, sustainability and resources can be ongoing challenges.
By joining forces with Athenian Schools, Moab Charter now gains access to stronger infrastructure, improved technology, and broader academic support. Our model emphasizes choices in learning, combining the best of traditional education and blended learning with hands-on, community-based activities. This merger isn’t about changing Moab Charter School’s core identity; it’s about building on its strengths.
Preserving Community, Building New Opportunities
I’m keenly aware of how important Moab Charter School’s traditions, culture, and community spirit are. As we discussed this merger, maintaining these vital aspects has always been our top priority. You’ll see many familiar faces, including beloved teachers and staff members who have been part of Moab Charter’s family. We are also excited to welcome Kate Aiken as the new Campus Leader, supported by Yuli George as Assistant.
Commitment to Families and Students
One of my top priorities has always been ensuring education adapts to the needs of families. With our merger, families can choose between traditional in-person learning for K–6 students or our blended model, supporting students K–8. Homeschooling families, too, will find a welcoming environment with access to resources, curricular support, and community events.
Our technology upgrades are already underway, providing students and teachers with advanced learning software and robust IT support. Infrastructure improvements, funded through community-driven initiatives like “Donate-a-Plank,” which demonstrated a commitment to maintaining and improving the Moab campus facilities through the efforts of many great people in our Moab community.
A Personal Commitment
Reflecting on this integration, I firmly believe we are creating a model for sustainable, rural education. Our goal is simple yet powerful: improve lives through meaningful education. This isn’t just a merger; it’s the beginning of a vibrant partnership where collaboration, open dialogue, and shared values will guide our growth.
As I recently shared with the Moab Charter School community:
“This partnership is built on shared values and a mutual commitment to providing high-quality public education to rural communities across Utah. As we integrate, we’ll grow together, preserving what makes Moab Charter special while opening new doors for our students and families. Your collaboration and positivity will be invaluable in this journey.”
Looking Forward
As we welcome this exciting new chapter, I invite everyone—parents, teachers, students, and community members—to stay engaged and share your feedback. Your voices matter deeply in shaping the future of our schools.
Thank you for joining us in this journey. Together, we’re creating something truly special for Utah education.
Warm regards,
Jared Ferguson
